Qatar Reaffirms Support for Yemen’s Unity Amid Renewed Fighting
Sheikh Tamim conveyed the position in a message to Chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council Rashad al-Alimi in response to an earlier letter concerning bilateral relations as well as the latest developments in Yemen, according to reports.
The Qatari emir also voiced support for the Yemeni people’s aspirations for greater security, stability and development. He stressed Doha’s commitment to strengthening relations with Yemen and maintaining cooperation between the two countries.
The message came as Yemeni government forces began Operation “Dawn of Yemen” against the Houthi group amid renewed fighting across parts of the country.
Earlier Monday, al-Alimi said the military campaign was intended to regain control of the capital, Sanaa, and restore state institutions that have remained under Houthi control.
Yemeni government forces have since reported advances in several areas, including locations near the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a major maritime passage linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
Qatar’s renewed expression of support for Yemen’s territorial integrity comes as the country faces another period of intensified conflict. The fighting has deepened a crisis that has persisted for more than a decade and has repeatedly disrupted efforts to reach a lasting political settlement.
Yemen descended into prolonged conflict in 2014 after the Houthis seized Sanaa along with several other provinces. The developments prompted a Saudi-led military coalition to intervene the following year in support of Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
A UN-brokered truce reached in 2022 later provided a period of relative calm, but the agreement collapsed in July, after which hostilities intensified once again.
With fighting now escalating, Qatar has reiterated its support for Yemen’s unity and sovereignty while backing efforts focused on security, stability and development for the Yemeni population.
