Qatar Supports Extending US-Iran Ceasefire as Talks in Continue

(MENAFN) Qatar has expressed support for extending the current ceasefire between the United States and Iran if ongoing Pakistan-mediated negotiations fail to produce an agreement, according to statements from its foreign ministry.

Speaking at a press briefing in Doha, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said, “We support extending the ceasefire until a peaceful solution is achieved,” warning that a return to hostilities would have serious global economic consequences.

He stressed that escalation would not serve any party’s interests and highlighted Qatar’s backing of diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan. He also noted that Doha remains in contact with multiple stakeholders and is closely monitoring developments.

The spokesperson rejected suggestions that Gulf states are excluded from current diplomatic processes, emphasizing that regional actors remain engaged due to the broader implications of the crisis, particularly the situation affecting the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route.

Al-Ansari called on Iran to maintain communication channels and return to negotiations in order to reach a peaceful resolution. He also reiterated Qatar’s position that restoring stability in maritime routes is essential for global energy security.

The comments come amid heightened tensions following restrictions on navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and military actions earlier in the year that significantly escalated regional instability.

Pakistan has been mediating talks between US and Iranian representatives, with earlier rounds of negotiations failing to produce a breakthrough. The current ceasefire agreement is set to expire soon, while discussions continue over the possibility of extending it.

Meanwhile, US leadership has signaled reluctance to prolong the truce without progress in negotiations, further increasing uncertainty over the next phase of the diplomatic process.
