Saudi Arabia Greenlights High-Speed Rail Connection with Qatar

(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia’s Cabinet on Tuesday gave formal approval to a bilateral agreement with Qatar to establish a high-speed electric railway linking the two Gulf nations.

The decision was made during a Cabinet session chaired by King Salman bin Abdulaziz in Riyadh, as reported by official sources. The endorsement finalizes the accord previously reached between the Saudi and Qatari governments.

The two countries had signed the rail agreement in late December during the eighth session of the Saudi-Qatari Coordination Council, held in the Saudi capital. The meeting was jointly led by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

According to reports, the planned railway will stretch approximately 785 kilometers (487 miles), directly connecting Riyadh and Doha. The route is set to pass through key urban centers, including Al-Hofuf and Dammam, and will integrate with major aviation hubs such as King Salman International Airport in Saudi Arabia and Hamad International Airport in Qatar.

The ambitious infrastructure project is expected to cut travel time between the two capitals to roughly two hours, with trains projected to operate at speeds exceeding 300 kilometers (186 miles) per hour.

Officials anticipate that the rail line will accommodate more than 10 million passengers each year while generating upwards of 30,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. Completion of the project is projected within a six-year timeframe.
